PROTEIN is a very important nutrient and is essential for the well being of our body. Proteins are required to create muscles, skin, blood, nails, internal organs and hair. Proteins help replace and form new tissue, transports oxygen and nutrients in our blood and cells, regulates the balance of water and acids, and is needed to make antibodies. But too much of any good thing can never be good. People believe that protein is only good and there is no problem even if it is in taken in excess. In fact people are risking their health by consuming too much protein. It is not just fat but even excessive protein consumption may cause heart disease, osteoporosis, kidney stones and stroke. Protein is highly necessary for our body but there are many misconceptions about how much we really need in our diet.

Studies reveal that Americans eat almost twice as much protein than what their body require. Many people who are aiming to become thin choose high protein diets and end up eating around four times more protein than what they require. This therefore does not help in loosing weight. Our body requires much less protein than what most people think. According to the American Heart Association 50-60 grams of protein is enough for most adults. Our body only requires 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Therefore one can calculate the exact amount needed by multiplying ideal weight by 0.36. But infants, children, pregnant and nursing women require more protein and should not follow this ratio.

People on high protein diets achieve weight loss primarily due to water loss. This is because the high amount of protein consumed especially from meat and dairy products raises the amount of uric acid and urea in the blood. These are toxic by-products of protein breakdown and metabolism. Our body tries to eliminate this uric acid and urea by pumping lots of water into the kidneys and urinary tract to flush it out. But a major side effect of this diuretic response is the loss of essential minerals from the body, including calcium. The high intake of protein leaches calcium from the bones, which leads to osteoporosis. As calcium and other minerals are leached from our bones, they are deposited in the kidneys and can form painful kidney stones.
A Vegetable-protein diet enhances calcium retention in the body and as a result smaller amounts of calcium is excreted in urine. This reduces the risk of osteoporosis and kidney problems. People who eat a vegetable based diet not as prone to kidney diseases as people who eat an animal-based diet. By replacing animal protein with vegetable protein you can avoid the pitfalls of the typical high-protein diet. You will be able to improve your health and regulate your weight while enjoying a vast array of delicious, nutritionally dense, high fiber foods.

But this does not mean that you can eat more. You still have to control your eating habits in terms of the amount you eat. One must try to burn more calories than what you consume as this is the ideal way of loosing weight. People need to add exercises to their daily routine and control the amount they eat. One can also take diet pills like Phentermine, which helps suppress the appetite and therefore make loosing weight a lot easier.
