A new study conducted by the researchers at the Mayo Clinic has found that people can include four servings per day in a reduced-calorie diet and still cause significant weight loss. The study was published in the August issue of ‘Obesity Research’.
The clinical trial consisted of the comparison made between the weight loss results of 72 obese adults who were following three different reduced-calorie diets. The diets included were a ‘high-dairy’ diet that consisted four servings of dairy foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt; a ‘high-dairy/high fiber/low glycemic index’ diet which consisted of four servings of dairy each day; and a ‘moderate dairy’ diet that included two servings of dairy foods each day.
After 48 weeks all the participants experienced similar weight loss and body fat loss. This has provided enough evidence that dieters do not have to eliminate dairy products from their diet to experience successful weight loss.
All the three groups of people experienced almost the same weight loss results. But it is interesting to note that the ‘high-dairy diet’ group which closely followed the prescribed diet and exercise plan also consumed four servings of dairy prods – which was almost 100 to 150 extra calories everyday. Still they were able to produce similar weight loss results as the ‘moderate dairy’ category.
In a clinical trial conducted earlier under the supervision of Dr. Michael Zemel a professor at the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee showed that obese adults who consumed three servings of dairy each day were able to loose twice as much weight as compared to low dairy diets. This study resulted in the dairy industry investing in a multi-million dollar advertising campaign.
But the test conducted by Dr. Michael Zemel was accused of being too small to become the basis for such a big ad campaign. Now with the new research results the dairy industry can breathe easy. It is proven that a dairy diet does not hamper a person’s weight loss attempts. But it still does not establish that dairy products cause weight loss.
It does prove that an obese adult can stick to a dairy diet and still manage to loose weight by making few changes to his diet and also carrying out fewer exercises. If diet drugs like Phentermine are added to this weight loss program then it may produce better results. Phentermine will help the dieter to curb his hunger and reduce his intake significantly.
